Five of the star performers in the Championship this season

It’s been another rollercoaster Championship season, with thrills and spills galore throughout the campaign. With things winding down, and only one round of fixtures remaining at the time of writing, it’s a good time to take stock of some of the players that have really excelled in the 2020-21 campaign.

With Norwich City ending as the runaway champions this season, several of their players have stood out head and shoulders above the rest. However, there have been plenty of outstanding performers across the division’s 24 clubs, so we’ve put together a diverse list of players that have shone this season for their respective clubs. Read on to find out who made the cut!

Ivan Toney (Brentford)

It’s only natural that we begin with the runaway leading goalscorer in the Championship this season. Ivan Toney has been a revelation for Brentford, scoring for fun and allaying the fears that the loss of Ollie Watkins and Saïd Benrahma last summer would have a devastating effect. Although Brentford have missed out on automatic promotion once again, it’s still been a fine campaign, and the form of Toney is one of the main reasons they’re favourites for the play-offs, with the Championship odds updated.

Emiliano Buendia (Norwich City)

It’s been a magnificent campaign for Norwich, and the decision to keep faith in manager Daniel Farke has reaped dividends, with the club returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Emiliano Buendia has played a major part in that success, dictating midfield with his silky skills and allowing the likes of Todd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki to flourish. The fact that Norwich’s team has largely stayed the same since their last season in the top flight could stand them in good stead for next season. Buendia will no doubt have plenty to offer in the Premier League next year.

Ismaïla Sarr (Watford)

Another team returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking are Watford, and players like Ismaïla Sarr are the reason they’ve found the Championship such a doddle. Sarr has bagged 13 goals this season, and the decision to hang onto him despite interest from multiple top-flight clubs last summer has proved astute. Sarr will have a major part to play if Watford are to re-establish themselves in the Premier League.

Adam Armstrong (Blackburn Rovers)

Moving away from the teams at the top end of the Championship table, the form of Adam Armstrong at Blackburn Rovers has not gone unnoticed. The former Newcastle United man has proved himself as a reliable goalscorer at Championship level, and that is borne out by the Englishman’s tally of 25 goals this season. It will be interesting to see whether Blackburn can hold onto him this summer, with his goals helping them avoid contention in the Championship relegation odds.

Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth)

Many raised their eyebrows when Bournemouth forked out nearly £20 million to buy Dominic Solanke from Liverpool in 2018, and it’s fair to say that the striker failed to make much of an impact in the Premier League. However, this season, with Bournemouth navigating Championship football following relegation from the top flight, Solanke has excelled. 15 goals and eight assists represent a good return from the 23-year-old, and you feel that his peak years are still ahead of him.
